Statistics
Now for some interesting statistics.
We have overspent every line element in the budget and the year is not yet over. I have opened and closed 17 contracts since I have come here (3 months), for work ranging from building crutches, furniture, compound fences, doors, windows and water wells. I have a further 8 contracts drafted and awaiting time and money to initiate. For reference, the previous log did only 27 in the whole year he was here. We have upgraded our vehicles endlessly and now they are working close to normal. I have initiated a process to hire a new driver and I hope to have that done by the year end. I have fired one guy, sent one guy home for 10 days unpaid leave, given four written warning letters and drafted a verbal warning to be filed in 15 files. I have run over 500 km, read 10 books, watched 25 movies, rewired the hospital to have 24 hour lights (13 of low power energy saving bulbs on a battery system, filled in for the warehouseman and created med orders for the hospital and 4 clinics for 1.5 months, hung 2 hammocks, plumbed a bathroom, recalculated OT and Holiday pay, identified errors in the payroll forms, forced policy memos for methodologies for dealing with incentive payments, reconfigured our med consumption tracking, instituted a better (tho still overly intellectually simple) stock management methodology and permitted the purchase of another, new, mattress for a nurse complaining that the last three she has had were not good enuf!!! ....and a whole bunch of tiny things...the list is endless. Don't forget the cholera episodes seemingly every Sunday afternoon. All this while dealing with expats who neither understand nor care for the protocols of good business ('give it to me now damnit, whether you actually have it or not. Do not interfere with my saving lives.")
