Last Days in A'dam
On Thursday I spent the day with various members of the logistics crew. They showed me around the joint and gave me a few peeks at some of the equipment. I was able to spend some time with one Log guy who had been recently to my mission site, Saniquellie, Nimba province Liberia. http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/liberia.pdf
Afterwards I decided to enjoy the heat of the afternoon - the first since my arrival in Europe - and walked back to the hotel instead of taking the trolley, it only took me 30 min. Went to the Leideseplein and got a yummy shawarma for 5 euro where I watched the to-ing and fro-ing of life on the square. How could life get better?
Friday saw a plethora of tutorials, from the head shrink (so...how do you handle stress?) to the water/sanitation guy to procurement (oh, can you hand deliver this package for us?). I was given my contract to sign and I did the deed. I am contracted until May 1, tho I understand that I must take some vacation in my last days so I should be home before then and still being paid.
So the deal is done. My flight is scheduled to leave for Monrovia, via Brussels, on Wednesday morning 24 August. There is nothing more to do. Well...other than reading all the paperwork and manuals foisted onto me. Forget that! I am up to my eyeballs in books. I am currently enjoying "Hope in Hell" inside the world of Doctors without Borders. Ahead of me is "Emergency Sex" (and other desperate measures) which profile 'true' stories from the field. Both are MSF-H library books and so it is a rip-roaring read before I step aboard my freedom-bird?
I love you all so much.
Adios
chris
